Historical & Geological Context

Quarried in Normandy since Roman times, Pierre de Caen was exported across the English Channel after the 1066 Norman Conquest to build the Tower of London, Canterbury Cathedral, and Westminster Abbey. Its fine micro-texture allows intricate delicate Gothic carving while retaining soft creamy elegance.

Petrographic & Geological Characteristics

Fine-grained light creamy-yellow jurassic limestone (Bathonian), quarried at Fleury-sur-Orne and Creully.

Lime Mortar & Breathability Compatibility

Pure fat lime putty (CL90) pointing; vulnerable to severe air pollution and sulfurous gypsum formation if sealed.

Provenance & Historical Sourcing

Calvados subterranean quarries.

Condition Report & Patina

Sheltered architectural applications; requires natural lime washes.
