Historical & Geological Context

Quarried on the Istrian peninsula and shipped across the Adriatic for over a millennium, Pietra d'Istria is almost pure calcium carbonate with zero porosity. Capable of withstanding permanent seawater contact and salt crystallization without spalling, it forms the water-level plinths, bridges, balustrades, and wellheads of the Venetian Republic.

Petrographic & Geological Characteristics

Microcrystalline dense limestone (Upper Cretaceous / Eocene), salt-water resistant, impermeable surface.

Lime Mortar & Breathability Compatibility

Bed in pozzolanic lime mortar (calce e pozzolana) adhering to traditional Venetian lagoon building methods.

Provenance & Historical Sourcing

Istrian peninsula quarries (Croatia / Italy maritime boundary).

Condition Report & Patina

Exceptional maritime durability; weathers from golden cream to gleaming salt-washed white.
