Historical & Geological Context
Tuffeau is the iconic chalk limestone quarried from the subterranean galleries of the Loire Valley. Exceptionally soft and workable when freshly extracted, it hardens over decades when exposed to air. Its blinding white-cream luminosity gave birth to Chambord, Chenonceau, and Azay-le-Rideau. Mandatory for authentic conservation of Loire facades, dormers, and fireplace mantels.
Petrographic & Geological Characteristics
Soft white chalky siliceous limestone (Cretaceous Turonian), high porosity (35-45%), delicate capillary structure.
Lime Mortar & Breathability Compatibility
Highly breathable; requires pure aerial lime putty (CL90-S) with fine quartz sand. Hard hydraulic cements cause rapid spalling.
Provenance & Historical Sourcing
Loire Valley cretaceous basins (Touraine and Anjou).
Condition Report & Patina
Requires breathable natural hydraulic lime (NHL 2) mortars; sensitive to non-breathable cement sealants.
