Historical & Geological Context

Known scientifically as crinoidal limestone, Pierre Bleue Belge has been quarried in Soignies and the Hainaut basin since the Middle Ages. Its high mineral density, dark blue-grey color, and petrified crinoid fossils offer unmatched durability against freeze-thaw cycles. Essential for heritage door surrounds, steps, water basins, and plinths across the Low Countries.

Petrographic & Geological Characteristics

Dense crinoidal limestone (Carboniferous Tournaisian), deep blue-grey to black when polished, fossiliferous.

Lime Mortar & Breathability Compatibility

Bed in non-staining hydraulic lime (NHL 3.5 or trass lime) to prevent efflorescence.

Provenance & Historical Sourcing

Hainaut basin, Wallonia, Belgium; certified Petit Granit origin.

Condition Report & Patina

Extremely dense and frost-resistant; takes fine bush-hammered, flamed, or honed velvet finishes.
